Bedwetting, Cramps & Puppies, OH MY!

My darling daughter is wetting the bed. A lot. Normally, this would not be blog-worthy, but she is also wearing pull-ups (generics, not name brand) to sleep in and quite frankly, I would probably be doing just as well to wrap her in paper towels. At least it would save some money.

The other issue I have with the nighttime wetting is that, unlike my son, she can't seem to sleep through it, but she also doesn't actually wake up. So, what we have is constant crying/whining until I go into her room. Get her up and literally put her on the potty. Really irritating. I have made her cut back on the milk before bed, but haven't completely cut her off from it. I suppose that is going to have to be next (and back to name brand pull-ups in a bigger size) if I ever want to hope to sleep through the night again.

I went for a run last night. Just a tad short of 4 miles. The run felt great. It is COLD here! Once I stopped running and walked home for my cool-down, my calves started cramping like nobody's business. I had stretched really well before running and again after, so I have no idea what is going on. I'm thinking it must have to do with the cold. But all through the night, my shins and calves took turns screaming at me.

On to what has my eye twitching and my stomach rolling...puppies! The kids and I have been talking for a while about getting a dog and I have been doing some browsing (prefer to get one from a shelter or from someone who just can't take care of it), but yesterday afternoon, one of my bosses sent a firm-wide email with 6 baby labs that someone had found on the road that needed homes. I have had a black lab before and really was not thinking along those lines this time - something much smaller. But that email just sent me over the top and I decided I would take one. However, fate stepped in and they were all claimed in a very short amount of time. Apparently I am not the only sucker ;)

But that has not stopped me from deciding that the time is now and I am pulling my hair out over what kind of dog we want and where to find one, yadda, yadda, yadda. I think I have finally decided what we should get and it is all just a matter of "wait and see" until I hear back on any of my leads!

First, nice job with the run. The cold, just like the heat, can mess with your body until it gets used to it so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

As for bed wetting, I'm not much of an expert. Matt and Jon got the hang of it very quickly and Christopher hasn't gotten there yet. I do agree with going to the brand-name pullups. The shift to brand-name diapers made a huge difference with Christopher.

As for dogs, Labs make great dogs for families as do Retrievers and German Shepards. Have fun looking.

I know nothing about parenting or dogs, but I'll offer my two cents on the run/cramping issue.

Great job on the 4 miler - since I haven't run in the cold forever, I can't really say if that is to blame...but the other things that usually cause cramping for me are dehydration, lack of calcium and/or potassium. Do you eat bananas ever?

That's all I've got...hope you find a fun little puppy and take pictures since I'm not responsible enough to have a pet of my own.

Uggghhhhh I don't know what to tell you chica. Keira goes to bed with a cup of water and she rarely if ever wakes up wanting to go to the bathroom or peeing the bed (So far only one night time accident. Knock on wood) But she is also the queen of holding it in, which means when she HAS to go she HAS to go. Normally you can spot the signs though. You know, crotch grabbing is a little hard not to notice LMAO!

You are SO brave to do the puppy thing. My sister bought a little pug puppy a couple months back and she (yes the childless sister LOL) was whining and complaining about how he had to let him out ever couple of hours and how exhausted she was when she went to work. *Rolls eyes* Yeah, and this is the same chick that wants to watch my kids HAHAHHAHAHAAAA. I guess it totally depends on what you're looking for?!? Big or small? Energetic or lazy?

Ummm... I'm really new to your blog so bear with me if what I said isn't very relevent.... I'd say get an older dog, maybe around age 4? Especially if you're thinking lab. That is, unless you're willing to run them at least 30 min/day. Believe me, puppies are ALOT of work. ;)

Oh, my Lauren loves her milk ~ chocolate that is ~ at night. Sounds like Payt and Lauren are still nightnight pullups babies. Le4t me know what works, besides NO milk at night!
Love reading your posts, even though I don't post everytime I stop by. ;)
Oh, I would love a black lab, but I know there's a lot of attention divas in that breed . . . I'll keep reading to see what puppy/dog catches your heart.

One of the things you can do is wake her up and make her go to the bathroom before you go to bed. I assume she goes to bed a bit before you do. Cutting back on the fluids can help. It's probably just the fact that her body has temporarily out grown her kidneys. LOL. Sounds strange, but its true. They will catch back up...

Nice run, chica! Some s-tabs might help with those cramps. And I have four Lhasa Apsos. Great family dogs, although I have a history with labs too. Can't go wrong there. Any dog with lab blood in it is usually a great family dog.

Speaking of wetting in the middle of the night (*cough* puppy *cough*)...

I think switching brands of pull ups will really help. Isaac does that every now and then and it's so frustrating.

We have had two labs now and then are great with kids. I think you guys will really have fun with a dog. The good thing about getting a younger one is that they get to know the kids earlier. If you get an older dog they might not be as tolerant to kids. I think it's very exciting!! :>)

I am with WS in that the cramps were probably from dehydration...that is what I think mine last week were from.

Ahhh... tough one. We have Grace in brand name pull-ups but don't know if that's what's helping. She sometimes goes in the middle of the night in pull-up, sometimes she doesn't. I sure hope it gets better!!

As far as puppies, don't know. but they are sooo adorable, aren't they!

Great run! too. Cold weather does intent to cramp up a little, until muscles get used to it. Awesome job!

Puppies are a lot of work but soo worth it. But be prepared to have another baby in the house to take care of for about a year if you get a young one. It took me about a year to get my german shepherd fully trained.

Great job on getting the run in. I have no idea about running in cold weather so I can't really relate to that. Maybe I'll have some advice after running in Columbus next week ;)

Great job running in the cold. It is cold here, it got down to the 60's here last night. Now I am starting to remember why I moved to AZ. As for a dog, I have an American Eskimo dog and they are great loyal pets. Stick with the brand name pullups. Kimberly is still in the same phase as your daughter. She can make it through the day and even nap time in panties, but at night it is a pullup and if she does not wet, she will then get a treat in the morning. Good luck to you with your training.

Rough night. Great job on the run though!! The cold weather kills my lungs.

Go for the puppy! Yes, they're a lot of work, but they are so worth it. We just got done doing a puppy training class and there were several families there who brought their kids - it seemed like a good opportunity to include them and teach them how to be responsible for something else in this world.

I found your blog through Jahowie's. I am sorry to read about the loss of your baby. That must be the hardest thing to face in the world. But it sounds like you are slowly coming around. It will take years, so don't worry or rush the feelings. As for the bedwetting, my kids are grown up now, and only one had a problem, but my one daughter started bedwetting when she was on an antibiotic and stopped when it was done, if that's any help. As for the leg cramps, when I first started running, it was horribly hot, and the only time I had to run was in the middle of the day, when it was about 90 degrees, so when I got done I would hose myself off with cold water, and then I would get cramps in my calves and legs. So it may be the cold and the fact you haven't been running long or are used to the cold. Maybe try a cool down walk after to see if you can adjust to the temperature before heading back into the house.
